I'm always going to have a soft spot for musicians who use their unique style to influence their work. David Bowie is the ultimate, the genius who started an overnight craze with his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust and that Aladdin Sane cover which will always be one of pop culture's most iconic images.Bands do it, singers do it- fashion and music always go hand in hand and a song was my inspiration for this post. Like a lot of people, my inspiration often comes from my iTunes library, or films or books, but today it was the former.
I've done moodboards for years and they are a great way to get your ideas down or great whenever you've got a bit of extra time. I tend to do them when I have an idea for a fashion shoot and am sadly short of models, a good camera, clothes, a set and basically everything that a fashion shoot requires!
As you all know, bold colour is massive this season, and I thought a fresh idea for a magazine shoot would be one involving fresh shades of blue. I got thinking of the Blondie song 'Union City Blue' (one of my all time favourites- I loveee Blondie!) and the video was an inspiration for this moodboard.
I always love a bit of a contrast in fashion be it frothy couture against a clinical backdrop or grungy clothes in a field of daisies- it looks striking and gets you thinking. I thought that, taking inspiration from Debbie Harry and her band playing in an industrial area, I would love the look of some really pretty blue dresses and separates (blue on blue on blue) on models atop grey skyscrapers and dull buildings.
The Rodarte dress I tore out from a past issue of Elle would be a perfect centrepiece, or something Peter Pilotto perhaps, with lashings of Stella McCartney denim and bold block cobalt- perhaps courtesy of Mulberry. Moodboards are a great way of getting you really creative with your look and ideas and they double up as some great wall art!
