"Suits you ma'am!"

Marlene Dietrich is a total style icon- rocking the androgynous suit that still managed to look sexy. This boy-meets-girl look is something that will never go out of style! So, ladies, just as you have your little black dress- you really should have a little black tux.

Now if you look at the gorgeous celebrities below (click image to enlarge), you will see how easy it is to shun a frilly frock for a look with a more edgy vibe- like a tuxedo suit or some tailored shorts. Alexa Chung shows just how to do all-out tuxedo in Chanel (centre) and also how to rock a more relaxed short and shirt look.

Now, a party is usually something that us girls use as an excuse to look glamorous- a mannish suit not usually an option- but it can a great look for a dinner or anything with that tricky "smart-casual" dress code. And don't be fooled- the androgynous look can be totally feminine and glamourous, it's all in the way you wear it.

The key to keeping it subtly girly is to keep your hair glossy (see Diane Kruger) and add a statement red lip or sexy smoky eye. Obviously, heels are an essential for a modern vibe- they should really make a statement with skyscraper heels and massive platforms (YSL Tributes and Trib Twos are the ultimate- if you have no budget!)

The look is alluring and timeless. The crucial thing is to make sure that the cut of your tux (or your tailored shorts) is flattering- anything too slouchy or shapeless could be very unforgiving and if you are scared of doing the edgy thing with a blouse and tie/bow tie, you could just wear a flirty blouse or have lacy lingerie peeping through (H&M have some modest lace underwear that would definitely work as outerwear, the bodices and bodies in particular). It really is a blank canvas for you to adapt to suit you- just like a LBD.

Would you swap your failsafe LBD for a tux? Always worth a try!
